Flores to fill municipal council’s vacant seat

Only two ran for the three seats last November — Ramon B. Camacho and Eric D. Demapan.

Camacho, the acting chairman, believes the council can function with only two members.

Rosario said Flores respects Camacho’s opinion, but added that according to the CNMI Constitution, the municipal council is composed of three members.

The Constitution also allows the mayor to fill a vacancy on the council with the advice and consent of the legislative delegation.

Rosario said it would be prudent to have three members to avoid deadlocks when resolving certain issues.

“The third serving member would serve as the tie-breaker,” he added.

He said at least two individuals have expressed interest in serving the municipal council.

“I am not at liberty to disclose their names until the mayor-elect receives confirmation from these individuals and after he has carefully examined their respective backgrounds and resumes,” Rosario said.

The appointment of the third member will be made after the mayor-elect takes the oath of office on Jan. 11, he added.

“The mayor-elect looks forward to working closely with the administration, the incoming 17th CNMI Legislature, and the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council on all matters local in nature,” Rosario said.
