Flores wants Saipan to have a ‘paradise wedding garden’

The new attraction will not be for couples only, but for tourists as well, he added.

Currently, wedding ceremonies are held in the mayor’s office conference room.

Commonwealth law authorizes the mayor to grant a marriage license and collect fees from applicants.

To create a “paradise wedding garden,” the mayor said they have to increase the marriage licensing fee from $50 to $200.

Flores said he has already asked the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation to amend the  marriage licensing law and a draft bill is already being prepared.

This measure will create a revolving account to pay for the costs related to the administration and other related operational expenses of the mayor’s office.

Flores, in his recent report, said $11,260 was generated from marriage application fees as of August this year.

He said his office received 158 marriage applications from January to August.
