Foreign workers mull early retirement to get retirement money

The foreign workers, including nurses of Commonwealth Health Center, said they are thinking of retiring this year in order to get their money.

“I was informed that if I will not retire before July of this year then I will not be able to get my pension,” a nurse who declined to be identified said.

She said she was informed by the Retirement Fund that she would get her pension by the age of 62 if she will not be able to retire this year.

But Retirement Fund Chairman Sixto K. Igisomar said the foreign workers “were either misinformed or are on denial about the real situation.”

“So the question I have is, Where they assisted properly, and did they get the proper service? Did they walk away in confusion, or with an understanding?” he asked.

He said he cannot recommend  one advice or solution to all the foreign workers as to what they should do “because different situations have different approaches…and the best thing to do is to call the Retirement Fund.”

He added, “Whether they need to retire earlier to get their money now depends on a variety of factors including their age, how long they have been working with the government and many other factors.”
