Mark Groom and two other students Rick Palmer and Tyler Cover of Out-of-Door Academy, Sarasota, won second place in the computer science category for their entry “An Acre of Power.”
Groom finished sixth grade at San Vicente in school year 2004-2005.
San Vicente principal Joaquina DLG Salas said she is happy for Groom’s achievement.
“I am very proud that our students continue to excel after they graduate and I’m proud that the school has contributed to the basic foundations of their education,” Salas said.
Groom’s former sixth grade teacher Izza Wilkinn said her former student is very smart, serious and focused.
“He is a very determined person when he wants to accomplish something, and his determination help him a lot in succeeding in his goals,” Wilkinn said.
She said Groom is also well-rounded and active in extra-curricular activities.
“I and SVES are very happy for him and proud of him. I hope we will have more students who will be successful in their endeavors,” Wilkinn said.
Groom’s parents used to own a business in Garapan before the family moved to the states.
Groom’s entry was just one of many from other schools participating in the 2010 Sarasota Regional Science, Engineering and Technology Fair.
The other categories were behavioral and social science, botany, chemistry, computer science, engineering, earth science, environmental science, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology, physics, and zoology.
The winners were given awards on April 16 by the Education Foundation of Sarasota Country Inc.
