French PM to visit New Caledonia

Fillon, who chaired a meeting of the committee on the implementation of the autonomy Nouméa Accord in Paris last week, is expected to make the official visit between March 7 and 9, the daily newspaper les Nouvelles Calédoniennes reported.

It has also been speculated that French President Nicolas Sarkozy will visit New Caledonia sometime in August or September this year.

Speaking to New Caledonian leaders in Paris in December, he hinted that he would to travel to the Pacific because “we have a rendezvous there with history.”

He will chair the third “France-Oceania” summit in Nouméa with Pacific Islands Forum member countries leaders expected to attend.

The two previous summits were held respectively in Pape’ete, French Polynesia in July 2003 and in Paris in June 2006.

Both were chaired by then-French President Jacques Chirac.
