FSM damage assessment team visits Mortlocks

The patrol boat carried 10,000 pounds of rice and a joint team of damage assessors from Chuuk and the national government.

The team members were Oleen Poll, FSM team leader; Marlyter Silbanuz, FSM team member; Wilfred Robert, Chuuk  representative; Alex Narruhn, Chuuk Health; Amanisio Joseph, Chuuk Education; and Valerio Manuel, Chuuk Agriculture.

A preliminary damage assessment report was later submitted to the national emergency task force, providing initial assessment to the damage the Mortlock Islands received.

The report stated that on most of these islands there was sea water damage to 80-90 percent of the taro, 75 percent of the bananas and 70 percent of the other crops which were sprayed with sea water.

On Oneop Island, only 45 percent of the taro was damaged.

The team found evidence that taro patches and other crops had been damaged on every island.

On Ettal, up to 95 percent of the taro and breadfruit was totally damaged by salt water intrusion.
