‘Garapan prostitution becoming a big problem’

GOVERNOR Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente admitted yesterday that prostitution at the Garapan tourist district is already an increasing problem.

The situation is already threatening the prime tourist and business area in the commonwealth to become “less conducive,” they said during yesterday’s press presentation of the CNMI’s financial profile (see related story).

Babauta said they will push for the “zoning” of Garapan district, and seek the Legislature’s support for the passage of legislation to this effect.

The zoning of Garapan district is one of the major concerns that the administration is trying to work on through the Garapan Revitalization Project. The Marianas Visitors Authority is aggressively working to bring in more tourists, as additional funding is being worked-out.

Benavente said that he and Attorney General Robert T. Torres will “personally lobby” for the passage of the zoning legislation.

Benavente said there is already a “unified position” among lawmakers, and what is needed now is the “actual resolution” to support the legislation.
