Garapan students march for citizens, veterans

On Friday, more than 800 students from all grade levels marched in Garapan area to demonstrate the meaning of citizenship.

The Citizens and Veterans  Parade temporarily closed the flow of traffic in Garapan at 10 a.m. as students and teachers marched from the school to American Memorial Park.

Derwin Johnson, event coordinator, said the event is the students’ patriotic way of expressing their love to their fellow citizens and to the nation’s veterans.

This year’s theme was “We the Citizen.”

In celebrating Citizenship Day, Johnson said the students were mindful about the characters of an individual viewed as a member of society, and his behavior in terms of his duties, obligations, and responsibilities as a citizen.

“As part of Garapan Elementary School and the Public School System’s health and wellness policy, this parade is also one way for our students to physically move their large muscles by enthusiastically parading around our huge campus,” Johnson said.

He said this and similar activities teach students the aspects of wellness and how to incorporate them into their daily lives.

On Veterans Day, when Americans took time to thank the brave men and women who are protecting their nation and its freedoms, Johnson said the Garapan students marched to wave flags in honor of the veterans and servicemembers.
