Geotourism is defined as tourism “that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place — its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.” In addition to promoting sustainability and conservation, geotourism emphasizes culture and history as distinctive assets of a place.
The NMI Humanities Council’s Geotourism Conversations will take place in Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. Businesses, government agencies, environmental NGO’s, and cultural and historic institutions are invited to an open forum on Monday, March 14, at 10 a.m. at the Pacific Islands Club.
The Saipan conversations will also include a guest lecture at Northern Marianas College on Thursday, March 10, at 12:30 p.m., as well as a community lecture for the general public on Tuesday, March 15, at the American Memorial Park Visitor Center Theatre at 6:30 p.m.
On Tinian, the entire community is invited to the Tinian Public Library on Tuesday, March 15, at 9 a.m.
On Rota, the community conversation will take place at Sinapalo Elementary School on Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m.
