Gonzales, who was one of the Covenant Party’s losing senatorial candidates in the 2001 election, is running as an Independent this time.
He said he will not use his TV show to promote his candidacy.
“I will focus on issues,” he added.
Gonzales is also the mining division chief of the Department of Public Lands.
He has a B.A. in political science from Washington State University and has served in various government positions under different administrations.
The Commonwealth Election Commission will begin registering the delegate candidates on July 7.
Nominating petitions and candidacy documents for this historic post that was created through the enactment of a U.S. omnibus package bill which contains the measure federalizing the islands’ immigration system and borders can still be submitted until August 6.
The other delegate candidates are Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio, Rep. Ray N. Yumul, retired Superior Court Associate Judge Juan Lizama, outgoing Election Commission Executive Director Gregorio C. Sablan, Sen. Luis Crisostimo, and former Sen. David M. Cing.
A delegate candidate should be at least 25 years old on the date of the election; a U.S. citizen for at least seven years; and a resident of the CNMI for at least seven years.
The delegate will have the same privileges and benefits enjoyed by members of the U.S. Congress and will be sworn in on Jan. 3, 2009.
Congressional delegates can introduce bills, offer amendments, and vote in committees, but they cannot vote on the floor of the House.
