Governor heads for Massachusetts

Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos will be the acting governor until Fitial’s return.

Press Secretary Angel Demapan said the NGA meeting will be held from July 9 to 11.

“They usually use the weekend to have sessions, so from there [the governor] will have about three to four days before the hearings. And so instead of flying back here and fly back again, he would spend time in D.C. meeting with officials,” Demapan told reporters.

He said there will be a congressional hearing on July 15  regarding the CNMI and American Samoa’s request to defer the mandatory, annual 50 cents minimum wage hike in the two territories.

The 50-cent mandatory wage hike in the CNMI that was supposed to be implemented this month was rescheduled for Sept. 30.

By then, the islands’ current minimum wage of $4.55 an hour should be raised to $5.05 and the increase should continue through 2015 when it reaches the federal rate of $7.25.
