Fitial, the titular head of the ruling Covenant Party which he established to support his gubernatorial bid in 2001, re-joined the CNMI Republican Party in hopes of forging an alliance with the national GOP which now runs the U.S. House of Representatives.
During a meeting with Australia’s Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs Richard Marles, the governor announced he will leave on Feb. 24 to attend a meeting of the western governors.
On Feb. 26, Fitial will attend the National Governors Association meeting.
He will join the Republican Governors Association meeting on Feb. 28.
While in Washington, the governor said he will also meet with the leaders of Guam, American Samoa and Hawaii, who are members of the Pacific Basin Development Council, to discuss regional issues.
