Community volunteer and Parks and Recreation staffer Max Aguon points to the broken padlock on the ground near the gate to the Grotto entrance in Marpi.
COMMUNITY volunteer and Parks and Recreation staffer Max Aguon said he was surprised to see a broken padlock on the ground near the gate to the Grotto entrance on Wednesday morning.
“I came to open the gate at 7:37 a.m., and saw the broken padlock on the ground,” he said. “I called my immediate supervisors, Ray Sablan, and Parks and Rec Director Mike Cruz.”
Aguon said they close the gate in the evening for safety reasons.
“There were signs that someone was here,” he added. “There was a shirt left at the pavilion. We also found a glove used for fishing. We suspect poachers broke the padlock and went in either late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning to fish.”
The Grotto is a protected area.
According to Aguon, they have CCTV footage showing a white pickup truck entering the Grotto.
He said the incident has been reported to the Department of Public Safety.
