Group may sponsor cockfight derby for a cause

He said although only one cockfight arena was given permit by the Saipan mayor, their group can hold cockfight events for charitable, education and scientific purposes.

Their goal, he added, is to “enhance and improve the level of cocker enthusiasts on island while maintaining a high level of professionalism in the sport and increasing the professional development of the breeders and game fowl in the CNMI.”

Pascual said they will  “abide with all the rules and comply with all the requirements” if they hold a cockfight event.

The group will consult a legal counsel to advise the members in any undertaking, he added.

On Sunday, the group met to discuss the draft rules and regulations.

Pascual said these will only apply to their cockfight activities but some can also apply to the Saipan cockfight arena, particularly  the rules prohibiting cheating.

The group’s members and officials are prohibited from engaging    in  cockfighting activities out of the designated cockfight arena that will use and promote the name of their organization.

The meeting was attended by Pascual; Ruben Talens, external vice president; Gener San Gabriel, treasurer; Eddie “Iling” Corcuera, secretary; Dominador Aquino, auditor; and public information officers Alejandro Tabora and Emelio Avelino.

The board headed by Jimmy Blancia presented the draft rules and regulations. The other board members are Efren Pinon, Omar Crusat, Alex Brizia, Bernard Lotoc and Marvin De Belen.

In an interview, Blancia said after finalizing their by-laws they will register with the Attorney General’s Office within this week.

He said their group will always cooperate with the management of the government-sanctioned cockfight arena in the campaign against illegal cockfights.

Corcuera, for his part, is calling all cockfight enthusiasts in the CNMI to join their group.
