Group unhappy with cockfight arena management

The group at the same time is willing to help the management by recommending improvements beneficial to the players and the cockfight operator, he said.

Pascual described the newly opened arena in As Gonno as unsafe to spectators because there is no screen that could protect the gamecocks from flying out of the enclosure.

Management is also not transparent about the rules and regulations, he added.

“We want to have quality cockfights here. We want also to protect our members,” Pascual said.

Jimmy Blancia, the group’s board chairman, said he visited the new cockfight arena and saw that the management installed a screen enclosure.

The management also announced that other facilities will be completed by October.

But Blancia said the management should not have announced the opening of the cockfight arena in As Gonno when it is still unfinished.

“The people don’t even know the place. There’s no direction given by the management,” he said.

The management, he added, has been negligent in its responsibilities and is not attending to the needs of the cockers.

“We see lots of negative rules that sometimes could hurt us,” he said.

Pascual and Blancia said their group is against illegal cockfights, adding that they want to propagate professionalism in local game fowl operations.

The group said it supports measures that are beneficial to cockers, breeders, cockfight operators and to the community.

The group said they want to promote the use of Saipan game fowls and provide effective technical practices and avenues for advancing the professional sport.

Bernard Lotoc, one of the members of the group, said they want to provide information and recommendations to breeders and cockers that can help develop their skills.

He said it is important to have certified gaffers, handlers, breeders and referees.

The group wants to increase its membership and “emphasize the importance of camaraderie in this organization.”

Blancia said anyone can become a member of their group, but prospective members should also form an association that will affiliate with the federation.
