Guam artists to honor Taman

Taman and other musicians from Guam and Saipan will be recognized during a special concert on Oct. 25 at the Yigo Memorial Park from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

With the theme, “Honoring Our Chamorro Recording Pioneers,” the whole-day event aims not only to honor local music artists of the past but also to acknowledge “our present and future local recording artists,”  URRA president John Acfalle said.

He said there is a need for the children and the youth to get acquainted with the pioneers in the various areas of culture and arts.

URRA said Taman is a prolific songwriter and a “living legend of Chamorro and Carolinian music.”

Taman wrote the song “Patron Marianas”  as well as its Parts II and III.

About four years ago, he wrote the “Pioneers of Guam,” a song that recounts the memories of community members who have passed away.

These songs are still being played on radio stations and Taman’s album continues to sell.

Taman said he wrote the songs because “I felt that years down the road the [people from the past] may be forgotten.”

He said the youth must know who they were and what they contributed to the community.

Acfalle said it is URRA’s mission to perpetuate Chamorro culture, its heritage, language and music.

“Our primary objective is to preserve the aspects of our local musical traditions from the past and the present for our future generations.”
