GUAM Power Authority recognized and acknowledged the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation’s post-Typhoon Mawar recovery assistance by presenting a certificate of appreciation and resolution during the 30th Pacific Power Association Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition at Crowne Plaza Resort.
GPA Assistant Manager Jennifer Sablan presented the certificate to CUC acting Executive Director Betty Terlaje on Tuesday.
“When Typhoon Mawar was heading to the Marianas, John Benavente of GPA and I had a phone call,” Terlaje said. “Unfortunately, our island of Rota, our sister island, was hit by it too. So, we had to take care of ourselves before we can finally help GPA,” Terlaje said.
But she said there was no hesitation on the part of CUC to provide assistance to GPA.
“This partnership that we have [through] PPA gets us through difficult times,” she added. “GPA had helped and assisted the CNMI after Typhoon Soudelor in 2015, and Super Typhoon Yutu in 2018, and without GPA’s help too, CUC would not have recovered as quickly as it had. It was an opportunity for us to reciprocate the assistance that GPA and Guam have given the CNMI. So from our hearts, dangkulo na si yuus maase and thank you for this acknowledgement,” Terlaje said.
On May 24, 2023, Mawar, a category 4 typhoon, hit the northern part of Guam with winds of up to 140 mph and gusts at 160 mph, which toppled power lines and created outages on the island.
GPA also recognized and acknowledged Pohnpei Utilities Corporation’s post-Typhoon Mawar assistance.
The four-day conference hosted by CUC from Sept. 25 to 28 is being held at the Hibiscus Hall of Crowne Plaza Resort.
