Guam featured in Taiwan golf magazine

Hagatña — The island will gain exposure in golf magazines in Taiwan, according to Guam Visitors Bureau officials.

Fifty-six Taiwanese golfers, accompanied by family members, participated at the 2nd GVB Cup Golf Tournament at Talofofo Golf Resort on Tuesday. Representatives of Golfer Magazine, which has a circulation of 65,000, and is considered one of the leading monthly golf magazines in Taiwan; and Golf Magazine, which has a circulation of 40,000, came to cover the tournament to gather information on Guam as a golfing destination.

The tournament was held by GVB and Continental Airlines to promote Guam as a premier destination for golfers in Taiwan. Chun Lin Weng took the grand prize at the tournament, which awarded him a round trip business class ticket to Taiwan-Guam-Taiwan, a crystal trophy and Taylor-made golf clubs.

Last year, the turnout at the inaugural golf tournament, which was held in October, was poor, according to Leigh Pereda, GVB public information officer.

“There were only about 14 or 15. There were many factors that contributed to the lower numbers last year compared to this year. One was the promotional efforts of the (availability) of the tour package. There wasn’t really a lot of time to sell it aggressively. The other factors were the (Sept. 11) tragedy and the other golf tournaments taking place either during that same time or shortly thereafter,” she said.
