Okkodo High School, Finegayan Elementary School, both in Dededo, and Inarajan Middle School, which is situated on a hill area in the southern village, sustained damage to classrooms and other areas of their campuses.
Billy Cruz, Department of Education supervisor, said about 15 classrooms were broken into at Okkodo, and at Finegayan, break-ins were reported at the office and the library. At Inarajan Middle School, at least seven classrooms were broken into.
Cruz said his employees are at the schools assisting the staff and faculty.
“They’re repairing doors and windows that were broken and damaged,” he said. “The schools are also doing an assessment on what was stolen.”
Rita Flores, assistant principal of Okkodo High School, said the incident at her school was reported between 7 to 7:15 a.m. on Saturday morning by the basketball coach who noticed that the male and female physical education offices were broken into.
According to Flores, the coach contacted the administrator, who in turn called the Guam Police Department.
An assessment was done on what was stolen and she said missing are two laptop computers, a pop-up tent, and physical education equipment.
She noted, however, they found five laptops in one of the classrooms.
“Whoever came on campus attempted to take seven laptops but only had taken two. We found five in a classroom on top of a cart,” she said, adding that the stolen laptops were from the marketing classrooms.
“Students from the marketing classroom were frustrated. Just looking at their faces — they were sad because they lost resources used in the classroom,” she said. “Those items are being used as a lab that teaches them sales and marketing. That also affects their learning experience.”
Down south at Inarajan Middle School, Vice Principal Angel Legaspi said the weekend burglary is the second time the southern campus was hit in just days. Last Friday, the school’s cafeteria and four classrooms were broken into and vandalized.
