Guam jobs up by 3.5 percent

“While September employment in both private and public sectors increased seasonally from June, despite a dip in construction, it is well above the comparable September period a year ago. Increased construction and employment related to increased visitor arrivals contributed to the year’s increase,” said Guam Department of Labor chief economist Gary Hiles.

Based on the latest statistics, federal employment on Guam rose by 40 percent this quarter or by 120 jobs.

Government of Guam employment also increased by 390 compared to the same month last year.

Federally funded temporary jobs for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act also created more jobs on the island.

Private sector jobs posted the highest growth. Jobs in businesses engaged in the tourism industry like hotels, lodging places, restaurants grew to 16,840 in September from 15,940 over a year ago.

In all, 46,430 people are employed in Guam’s private sector while 11,880 work for GovGuam.

Jobs on Guam are projected to further increase once the multi-billion-dollar military buildup moves forward.
