Guam manamko’ meet NMI counterparts

Yesterday, the group composed of 21 senior citizens and five escorts left Saipan after attending Mass at the Mt. Carmel Cathedral.

Aging Office acting Executive Director Rose Mondala said the senior citizens of Saipan welcomed their Guam counterparts on Friday with, dances, songs and lunch at the manamko’ center.

“It’s been a while since we last interacted with them,” Mondala said, as she disclosed the Saipan manamko’s plan to visit Guam next year.

The Aging Office cancelled the scheduled trip to Guam this year because of the death of its then-executive director, Howard Macaranas.

The group from Guam comprised members of the Yona-Talofofo Senior Citizens Center headed by Rita Cruz.

Cruz said their group visited Bird Island, the Grotto, Suicide Cliff, Banzai Memorial Park and other tourist spots on Saipan.

Johnny T. Afaisen, the manager of the group’s center on Guam, said it was their first time to visit Saipan.

“This is history in the making for us,” Afaisen said, adding that their group has also visited the Philippines and the U.S.

At the manamko’ center, Mondala presented the Guam senior citizens with a plaque of appreciation for their visit.
