KOROR (Palau Horizon) — The University of Guam’s Upward Bound Program recently sent six students to Palau to study the country’s culture and traditions.
Program coordinator Rowena Andrade said the senior high school students spent a week in Palau to visit its cultural sites.
She said the university usually chooses only four students, but the program received more funding this year, enough to accommodate six students.
Andrade said the students were chosen based on their qualifications.
She said the original list contained the names of 12 students from different schools.
The six students chosen for the Palau trip were Ferdinand Manuel and Tara Unpingco of George Washington High School; Jamie Giebel and Ron Muna, of John F. Kennedy High School; Piolani Mesa and Mike Edgerle of Southern High School.
The group visited Koror, Ngeremlengui, Kayangel and Peleliu.
The students said they enjoyed their visit at the bird sanctuary in Kayangel, the Dolphins Bay in Ngeruktabel, and the Rock Islands.
The students said they liked sleeping in an abai in Ngeremlengui.
The students donated some sports equipment to JFK Elementary School in Kayangel.
They said the local people warmly welcomed and accommodated them.
Sens. Yukiwo Dengokl and Surangel Whipps also met and dined with the students.
The students said they would write a report about their visit when they return to Guam. They will present their reports before graduation.
