H1N1 flu vaccination in schools this week

Public Health Secretary Joseph Kevin Villagomez said the second shipment of the  H1N1 flu vaccines totaling 4, 300 doses arrived last week.

These include 1,500 doses of flu mists or sprays and the rest are vaccine shots.

To date, the CNMI has received two batches of the H1N1 flu virus totaling to 6,700 doses.

Villagomez said although there have been no additional confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in the CNMI, it is still prevalent.

Samples from the CNMI are being sent to San Antonio, Texas.

“We are working on the possibility of sending samples to other places for laboratory testing to get back the results faster, but laboratories all over the world are swamped,” he said.

Medical director Dr. Richard Brostrom said the vaccination for the schools is timely especially with the reported slight increase in flu cases.

Villagomez assures the community that the H1N1 flu vaccines are  “safe and effective” and no serious side effects have been reported.
