Head Start boosts recruitment process

In her report to the Board of Education, Palacios said recruitment of children continued throughout November with the collaboration of the Family Partnership Advocates.

The recruitment effort continues to be conducted at the Head Start main office during regular working hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..

Recruitment is also done through door-to-door visits and during community events, Palacios said.

As of the last instructional day of reporting month, the total number of children enrolled was 462 for August, September, October and November.

Last August, 98 children were recruited and were on the waitlist. The figure was 106 in September; 109 in October; and 122 in November.

There were 433 eligible children in August and 419 in September, October and November.

Of the total enrollment in September, 209 children were categorized as Pacific Islanders and 218 were Asians.

In October, 208 were Pacific Islanders, 219 were Asians.

In November, there were 210 Pacific Islanders and 217 Asians.

In September, Head Start had 88 children three to four years old; 76 in October; and 60 in November.

There were 374 children four years old and above enrolled in September; 386 in October; and 402 in November.

The student attendance  rate was  85 percent.

There were 18 children  withdrawn in September, 1 in October and 4 in November. The reason of withdrawal varied from relocation of family, medical and transportation issues.

Palacios said Head Start was able to ensure the full implementation of the Creative Curriculum, Second Step and the Montessori Curriculum.

“Individualized child observations are ongoing. This was to ensure that teachers identify children’s strength, concerns and challenges,” she said.
