CNMI-WIC clinic manager and registered dietitian Dianne Esplin said the approved food guide has been in use since WIC was created in the 1970s.
Although the new food menu is not yet available, Esplin said it will include locally produced fruits and vegetables.
The food packages for WIC beneficiaries amount to about $60 a month.
The current WIC approved food guide in the CNMI includes any combination of cereals totaling to 36 oz. or less, one liter of Foremost brand pasteurized milk, 46 oz. cans V8, Ruby Kist juice and a choice from any brand of frozen concentrate, any U.S.-grade A white chicken eggs, 16-18 oz. jars peanut butter, dried beans, lentils or pea in 16 oz bags, and one-pound block of cheese.
She said there are six WIC authorized vendors on Saipan — I Mart in Tanapag, Kagman Market, Joeten Dandan, Joeten Hafa Adai in Garapan, Han Nam Market in Koblerville, and Payless Supermarket in Chalan Kanoa.
Tinian has two WIC authorized vendors — Fleming Store and San Jose Store.
Rota has also two WIC authorized vendors — Sinapalo Safeway and Lucky Store in Songsong.
