Hotel occupancy rate at 50% in May

42,470 of 84,196 available room nights sold in May, compared to 41,968 of 85,250 available room nights sold over the same period last year.  Room rates were down slightly from $96.13 last year to $93.75 in May 2010.

“The situation is really quite desperate for Northern Marianas tourism,” said HANMI Chairman Nick Nishikawa.

“While arrivals from Korea and China were higher in May, our major market of Japan continues to see very low numbers.  Without additional effort to attract and keep flights and to promote the islands, the economy will continue to decline.”
