Not wanting to be tied down to a political group’s agenda, Deleon Guerrero said he will run again as an Independent.
“As an Independent candidate, I don’t have to go along with a platform that I don’t particularly believe in. We are, after all, representing the people,” he told the Variety in an interview yesterday.
In Nov. 2007, Guerrero garnered 484 votes and lost to Rep. Edward T. Salas, R-Saipan, who got 487.
The son of a former senator and the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial candidate in 1981, Deleon Guerrero said his desire to run for public office is largely fueled by the local community’s need to change its political landscape to better serve the people.
After losing the election, Deleon Guerrero left his teaching job at Kagman High School and worked as legislative aide of House Floor Leader Joseph N. Camacho, R-Saipan.
Deleon Guerrero said nothing much changed since 2007.
“We’re addressing the same issues this 2009. Two years after the election, our education system is still the same. Nothing has changed at all. We need to take action,” said Deleon Guerrero, an American studies graduate of the University of New England in Maine.
Camacho endorsed Deleon Guerrero’s candidacy.
“He’s a good man. He’s a hardworking man. He’s a member of the choir at church. He’s a teacher. He’s an educated man. He works hard in the community,” said Camacho.
