House fails to get enough votes to override another vetoed bill

Six lawmakers voted against the override, which was supported by 12 members. One abstained.

The House needed at least 13 votes for an override.  The Senate overrode the veto on Aug.  22.

Senate Bill 16-16 would have established the position of resident director for DPL’s Tinian and Rota offices.

Before the House voted on the override, Speaker Arnold I. Palacios, R-Saipan, said the new management of Rota Resort & Country Club was surprised to learn that DPL and the Attorney General’s Office were claiming that the hotel was trespassing on  public land because the facility’s purchase deal had not been approved by DPL.

Other lawmakers said DPL’s action is sending the  wrong message to other potential investors.

Sen. Paterno Hocog, R-Rota and the bill’s main sponsor, said his measure aims to ensure that Rota and Tinian actively take part in the management and disposal of their public lands.

But the governor said the proposal may be in conflict with the CNMI Constitution.
