Under the fiscal year 2009 budget bill, PSS can hire up to 1,113 full-time employees, including classroom teachers, for its 20 schools on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian.

The committee said $29.8 million will be appropriated for personnel salary while operations will get $2.8 million.

PSS will have $3.6 million to pay for its utility bills this fiscal year.

According to the committee, “no part of PSS funds shall be used to pay for any expense, including but not limited to travel or reimbursement of the Board of Education, board members, and staffers.”

The commissioner of education remains the expenditure authority of the PSS budget.

For its part, the Board of Education will get  $143,098  for the salaries of its three staffers and $24,913 for non-personnel costs.

The board stands to receive a total of $168,012 in FY 2009.

PSS, in FY 2007, received $35.7 million.

It has yet to receive the $2 million in Compact-Impact funding for FY 2008.
