House will tackle tobacco bill today

THE House of Representatives will take action today on the proposed amendment to a law enacted last year for the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. As requested by the Attorney General’s Office, House members are also expected to reject the changes in the admission rules proposed by the Supreme Court.

In a memorandum, House Speaker Heinz S. Hofschneider said they will have a special session today to tackle the amendment to P.L. 12-45 signed by then Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio on April 20, 2001.

Rep. Gloria DLC. Cabrera, R-Saipan, recently introduced H.B. 13-134 to amend the law. The bill is a response to the National Association of Attorneys General’s request for the CNMI to come up with an amendment to the law which should be a “model statute” consistent with the requirements under the master settlement agreement. The association said the commonwealth should have an amended version of P.L. 12-45 by July 1.

Rep. Stanley T. Torres, R-Saipan, said the House will also reject the Supreme Court’s proposed amendment to the Rules of Admission requiring attorney-applicants to take additional testing before they are allowed to practice in the CNMI.
