A two-member team from the New Zealand Human Rights Commission is in Apia to conduct the relevant scoping exercise.
Team members are Commissioner Joy Liddicoat and principal advisor for race relations Samuelu Sefuiva.
They are apparently conducting the exercise on behalf of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions.
Samoan Attorney General Aumua Ming C. Leung Wai said in a letter that the request for the visit was made by his office with Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi’s approval.
The team has held discussions with certain government officials and members of the public.
Human rights issues involving prisoners, children, the Samoan culture and certain laws were discussed.
The team says they will be handing their report to the attorney general before they leave.
