THE Northern Marianas Humanities Council continues to celebrate Humanities Month with the launching of “Legacy of a Political Union,” by the late Edward “Eddie” Deleon Guerrero Pangelinan, the islands’ chief Covenant negotiator, on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.

According to a media release, the book is a collection of publications and personal essays in which Pangelinan reflects on his “admiration for his colleagues, and the hope he has for his people” while “offering his first-hand experience of a pivotal time in world history.”

The book launch will also feature digital copies of his collection of artifacts from his life and work as chair of the Marianas Political Status Commission and CNMI resident representative to the U.S. from 1978 to 1984.

Print copies of the book will be available to the public for free, in limited quantities.

“Mr. Pangelinan’s leadership in negotiating the terms of our U.S. Commonwealth status and subsequent work to implement the terms of our Covenant agreement with the U.S. lay the foundations for our collective actions toward self-determination and self-government as a people,” said Humanities Council Executive Director Leo Pangelinan in a media release. “I am honored that he chose our Council to publish his insights into our political history and that his book will preserve his unique perspectives and experiences for posterity.”

Some of Eddie Pangelinan’s working papers, reports, photos, and personal artifacts are available for public viewing on the Humanities Council’s digital archives at https://archives.nmhcouncil.org/.
