Hundreds benefit from church medical mission

The seven nursing students of Northern Marianas College led by Hervin Jacinto also provided information about healthy food during the church’s medical mission.

“They should be more health conscious,” nursing student volunteer Myles Rodriguez told Variety. “Not only did we administer blood sugar and blood pressure examinations, we also gave them pamphlets about proper diet and exercise,”

Church pastor Claire Javillonar said 78 community members  availed of the free blood pressure checkup, and 68 underwent blood sugar examination.

“Compared to the last two years ago, we have more individuals, locals and Filipinos, taking advantage of the free community service,” Javillonar said.

44 were given free physical therapy services, 31 received a free haircut, 57 availed of the eye screening and 41 were given spiritual counseling, she said.

The church, through the support of its sponsors, also distributed 118 packages containing hand sanitizers, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and mineral drinking water, she added.

Priscilla Navarro, a resident of Chalan Piao, said she was happy the church initiated the program that her family needed.

“They should continue this kind of service to the people because everybody can avail of it whether or not you are a member of their church.”

Javillonar said they will continue the program next year.

She thanked those who supported this year’s medical mission:

Project Director Tayna Camacho of the Diabetes Prevention and Tobacco Prevention Program, the NMC nursing department, SDA Church, Bravo Pharmacy, Lueng Fong, Beth Blas, JC Marketing, Triple Hardware, Triple J Wholesale, Pearl River, Saipan Garage Sale, XO Mart, Hailan Market, Tudela Store, H-Mart, Twin Supermarket, Hannam Supermarket, Guangdong, Kevin Department, Sophies Clothing, Shun Laundry, Saloon for Men and Women, Trend Saloon, Pentecostal Mission Church of Christ, 4th Watch volunteers, and J.C. Tenorio Enterprises.

Javillonar said the remaining $215 in cash donations and one box of assorted items that were not distributed will be sent to the typhoon victims in the Philippines.
