If the card says you win $100K, beware

The AGO’s Consumer Protection Unit said the scam is being run by the con artists using the name Romantic International Travel Group that solicits from unwary residents personal and financial information, including social security and bank account numbers.

The sham company under the guise of “scratch-card” winnings also asks residents for their mailing addresses for the purpose of sending them promotional offers.

After obtaining mailing addresses, scratch cards — at least two — are sent along with instructions on how to claim winnings.

When scratched, at least one of the cards will claim that the recipient just won $100,000. But here’s the hook: in order to claim the prize money, residents are instructed to transmit via fax valid identification and bank account information.

The public is advised to remain cautious about this type of scam and other tricks meant to separate them from their money and identity.

The AGO warned people against giving out their personal information such as bank account or credit card numbers.

“Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” Attorney General Alicia Limtiaco said.

Those who think they may have been a victim of the sham operation or approached by a suspicious offer are advised to contact the consumer protection office.
