Indonesia frees Australians jailed in Papua

The five, who said that they were tourists, landed in Merauke, in the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea, in Sept. 2008 without a flight permit or visas.

In January, a lower court sentenced the pilot, William Scott Bloxam, to three years in jail and ordered him to pay 50 million rupiah ($4,170) for flying into Indonesia without permission. The other four were sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay 25 million rupiah each.

The group will fly back to Australia in their own plane later on Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest, their lawyer Mochamad Rivan said.

The government is particularly sensitive about Papua, where independence activists have waged a campaign for nearly 40 years to break away from Indonesia.

A lawyer had previously said the Australians had flown to Merauke because they wanted to visit a national park in the area and had thought they could get a visa on arrival.
