Inos: Covenant Party intact

In an interview yesterday, Inos, who is now  the titular head of the party, noted its election triumphs since it was established on March 24, 2001, to coincide with Covenant Day.

The holiday, which is being celebrated today, marks the anniversary of President Gerald Ford’s signing of U.S. Public Law 94-24, which enacted the Covenant to Establish a Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Political Union with the United States of America.

The Covenant Party controlled the 12th, 14th and the current 16th House of Representatives. It also won the gubernatorial elections in 2005 and 2009.

Inos said there are officers and members who continue to be loyal to the aspirations of the Covenant Party.

“There may be a few who have decided to leave the party but predominantly the party is still intact,” he said.

The party’s founder, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, has rejoined the Republican Party.

But Inos said the Covenant Party remains “very vibrant” and its members and supporters are still “working together.”

He said party chairman Gregorio Camacho called for a party meeting today.

When the party was formed a decade ago, Inos said the membership decided to hold their  meeting on Covenant Day each year.

Asked if the governor will be invited to today’s gather, Inos said the Covenant Party is an inclusive group — anybody who wants to join is welcome to do so.

The meeting will be held at the Minatchom Atdao on Beach Road in Susupe from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Inos said he constantly consults with the party leadership and the party itself continues to look into the local economic situation and other issues as it makes plans for the CNMI’s future political events.

Fitial, the first governor to be reelected since 1985, can no longer seek another term. His second term ends in Jan. 2015.
