Intoxicated pedestrian struck by vehicle in low visibility accident

(Department of Public Safety) — On Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, at about 7:02 p.m., patrol officers responding to a disturbance came upon an auto-pedestrian accident in front of the Lucky Star Market on Beach Road in Chalan Kanoa.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Toyota CH-R had exited the Lucky Super Market parking area, heading south direction, when it struck a female pedestrian, who had crossed the street coming from the former Jin Zhou car wash. The 21-year-old male operator of the CH-R indicated that visibility was poor due to low lighting and heavy rain. He had initially thought that he had struck a traffic cone, and was alerted by other motorists who honked to get his attention.

The 48-year-old female pedestrian sustained a fractured left ankle and was transported by the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation for treatment. She was later discharged.

Officers learned that the female pedestrian was intoxicated at the time she was struck by the vehicle. The driver was found to be sober and not under the influence of alcohol or any drug. No citations were issued to the operator of the vehicle or the pedestrian.

This case remains under investigation.
