Castro admitted the charge of assault and battery which is a lesser-included offense of aggravated assault and battery.
It was not immediately known if Castro’s victim filed a lawsuit for losing his vision as a result of the attack.
An eye doctor at the Commonwealth Health Center said Hank Kenny Taitano, the victim, lost his vision on his right eye, police said.
Castro is expected to be released from prison on Sept. 21, 2011 as the court credited time he already served since his arrest last January.
He will be placed on three years’ probation, and will not have any contact with his victim during his probation period.
The court said Castro will write a letter of apology and pay restitution to his victim in an amount to be determined by the Adult Probation Office.
Castro will pay a $100 fine, a $25 court assessment fee, and a $300 probation fee, the court said, adding that the defendant will complete 200 hours of community work service.
Police said Castro hit Taitano with a three-foot wooden stick in the Fiesta Resort beach area on Jan. 21, 2011, hurting the victim’s right eye.
Castro was immediately arrested by responding police officers at the Hyatt beachside, while the round smooth stick he used in the incident was confiscated and secured as evidence.
Police said prior to the assault, Taitano was having a “little misunderstanding” with a Japanese female friend at the Hyatt beachside.
Taitano and his Japanese female friend were walking to the Fiesta beachside when the victim was approached by Lucian George and Castro, police said.
After George asked Taitano what was happening, Castro struck Taitano in the face with a wooden stick, police said.
Taitano ran and sought help at the Koban police substation in the area.
“Run because I am going to kill you! You’re dead!” Castro was quoted by the police as saying while running after the victim.
