Japan nuclear accident not a serious threat to Micronesia

The National Weather Forecast Office on Guam says in a couple of months winds from Asia and Japan could come down into the area.

But the center’s warning coordination meteorologist Chip Guard said at present, the winds will carry any radiation away.

“Right now it looks like our islands are in good shape and probably for any kind of low level radiation, it will probably hang out in unpopulated parts of the ocean,” he said.

He said if there is a big nuclear explosion it will release material higher into the atmosphere that can cause other concerns.

But he said there will probably still be no effect on Micronesia for the next few weeks.
