(JKPL) — Joeten-Kiyu Public Library delivered much needed summer reading program supplies and incentives to the Tinian Public Library on Thursday, May 30, 2024. As part of the JKPL’s commitment to promoting literacy and education throughout the CNMI, the JKPL has collaborated with the Office of the Governor, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, the Office of the Lt. Governor, Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang, the Office of the Mayor of Tinian and Aguigan, Tinian Mayor Edwin P. Aldan, and the Tinian Public Library to ensure that children on Tinian have access to the books and resources they need to keep reading and learning during the summer months.

The summer reading program supplies provided by the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library include art supplies, school supplies, and other educational materials designed to keep children engaged and learning throughout the summer. In addition, JKPL has also provided incentives such as stickers, bookmarks, and other rewards to encourage children to participate in the program and continue reading.

“We are thrilled to be able to support the Tinian Public Library and help promote literacy on Tinian,” stated Library Director Erlinda C. Naputi. “By providing these essential supplies and incentives, we hope to inspire a love of reading in the children of Tinian and help them develop the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.”

During the summer, children and teens who are not reading or participating in other learning activities can lose up to two months of academic skills achieved during the school year. According to Assistant Commissioner for Libraries and New York’s State Librarian Bernard A. Margolis, “Study shows that students lose two months (22%) of reading during the summer. Public libraries, through their summer reading programs, put books in the hands of children. This is the best antidote for the ‘summer slide’ in children’s reading achievement. Access to books and library programs over the summer results in more reading which, in turn, results in improved reading skills.”

The 2024 Collaborative Summer Library theme is “Adventure,” and the slogan is “Adventure Begins at Your Library!”
