WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congresswoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds issued the following statement Friday after her official swearing in to represent the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in the United States House of Representatives:
On the swearing in
“I am not one for ceremonies, but today has been a truly memorable one for me. Representing the amazing people of the Northern Marianas and our beautiful islands in Congress is both a blessing and a profound responsibility. It has been a surreal experience, but what makes this day most significant is that it marks the official beginning of our work for the people of the CNMI.”
On the election of the Speaker
“In today’s opening session, we elected the Speaker of the 119th U.S. House of Representatives. I had the great pleasure of meeting and speaking with Speaker Mike Johnson. During our conversation, I relayed my support and shared my objectives as Delegate — to help our economy recover, to secure opportunities for our people, and to work collaboratively with leadership to help the CNMI achieve greater self-reliance. Speaker Johnson is a thoughtful and capable individual, and I look forward to working under his leadership.”
On the next steps
“Congress will remain in session through January 24th. During this time, I will begin work within the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Veterans Affairs Committee while setting the groundwork for our legislative agenda — seeking pathways to lower the cost of living for CNMI residents, expanding access to veterans’ services in the Northern Marianas, and promoting greater transportation options for residents and visitors to our islands.
“On top of the work in committees, I will be pushing our agenda for more stability in our labor force, making sure our borders are better protected, and bringing in more resources to help train our local residents so they can find success right here at home.
“While Congress is in session, I’ll be working every day — connecting with offices and building partnerships to make real progress on these goals for the CNMI. I said we were going to hit the ground running — and I brought my running shoes. We’re ready to go.”
