Korean ballet dancers perform on Saipan

Over a hundred guests, mostly from the Korean community of Saipan, showed up for the presentation.

The group, which blends classic ballet and traditional dances, has performed in several countries including the U.S., China, Japan, Europe and other places but it was their first time to perform here.

The group performed six numbers — the Nutcracker Doll of the Waltz of the Wildflowers and the Hwajomu; Birth, which depicts the waiting for the birth of a universe from the collision of eastern and western cultures; Midnight which is about remembering the stories of the moonlight; Pietais Flower Path, which shows how how sacrifices for love is painful but leads to the eternal flower path; and Freedom, which is about the idea that one can overcome the pain of broken hands and legs but not that of losing one’s homeland.

The performances were choreographed by Park Hea Ran, stage director Hur Sung Jae, and Kim In Sook who is also the group’s dance and art director.

Students of the Glushko’s Academy of Performing Arts participated by performing a couple of dance numbers.

The visiting group’s performance was part of South Korea’s commemoration of its Independence Day on Aug. 15.
