Korean group eyes peace park in Melekeok

KOROR (Palau Horizon) — A peace park in Melekeok State has been proposed in memory of the 5,000 Koreans who died during World War II on the island.

President Tommy Remengesau said during his trip to South Korea that he met with the members of Korea Memorial Association who have indicated interest in constructing a monument in to honor the 5,000 Koreans.

Remengesau said the monument will be dedicated to the Koreans and to world peace.

Remengesau recently traveled to South Korea to meet with government officials and join the nation’s celebration of the World Cup Eve Festival.

During his trip, Remengesau also gave his support to South Korea on its bid to host the 2010 World Expo.

Remengesau likewise met with the officials of Asiana Airlines to consider the possibility of having direct flights from South Korea to Palau.

Remengesau, moreover, visited a sewage treatment facility site to see the latest solid waste system technology.

Palau is planning to build a solid waste management system in Aimeliik State and close the M-dock dumpsite.
