Lakatani: Resettlement key to Niue survival

ALOFI (Pacnews) — Niue’s Premier Sani Lakatani, a member of the ruling Niue People’s Party, says population development, information technology, renewal energy projects and eco-tourism are top of the agenda for future survival of the island, which has a population of 1400 Niueans and 300 expatriates, mostly Tongans, Tuvaluans and Europeans.

Lakatani announced that he has asked the UNDP Population Development Committee for funding to set up a database for information about Niueans living overseas and their skills so they can be recruited for resettling on their 265 sq. km. raised coral atoll homeland.

Lakatani told Radio New Zealand International that he is still hopeful that the island may become an information technology hub for the Pacific and is looking for foreign investment. In addition, the Premier said Niue needs to establish renewable energy projects such as power from solar, wind and wave generation.
