Last defendant in murder of MHS security guard pleads guilty

Igisomar admitted to the sole charge of first degree murder of Efren Lagua Ballesteros, 45, nearly three years ago.

Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja scheduled the sentencing for May 5, 2001.

Igisomar was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after yesterday’s hearing.

The defendant, who is being represented by the Public Defender’s Office, has been incarcerated since his arrest.

Assistant Attorney General Brian D. Gallagher, who prosecuted the case, said: “The commonwealth is pleased with the result, and that this long ordeal is nearly over.  The three defendants who committed this horrible crime did not just take one life, they destroyed the victim’s family.”

“The damage they did to their own families and the community is impossible to measure,” the lead prosecutor said.

Gallagher added: “Many people worked long and hard hours to achieve closure for the victim’s family and justice for the people of the commonwealth.

Various departments within the [Attorney General’s Office] and the Department of Public Safety all worked together to achieve this outcome. We’re all glad that we could achieve a fair and just result.”

Igisomar’s plea offer calls for a maximum sentence of 22 years.

“The defense can argue for a lower sentence allowed by law. The lowest sentence the judge could give under the law is 10 years,” Gallagher said.

This is the last criminal case being handled by Gallagher, who was recently appointed as chief of the AGO civil division.

Edward Blas, the second defendant who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment with the possibility of parole.

Upon release from prison, either on parole or expiration of his jail sentence, Blas will be placed under 20 years of supervised release.

Naraja required Blas to pay a $2,000 fine that can be converted to community work service, a $100 court assessment fee, and a $2,000 probation fee.

Eric Rabauliman, another defendant, was sentenced to a 26-year jail term.

The three beat to death Ballesteros with a PVC pipe, an iron rebar and a 2×2 wood on Nov. 17 or 18, 2008, the prosecution said.

The victim’s wallet containing $300 cash was stolen along with his wristwatch, the prosecution added.

Afterward, the defendants stole laptops belonging to MHS, the prosecution said.

Blas and Igisomar were both 16, while Rabauliman was 18 when they were charged and arrested for the crime.
