Law enforcers urged to comply with Ethics Act

PUBLIC Safety Commissioner Edward Camacho on Friday reminded all law enforcers to comply with the Government Ethics Act by not accepting gifts, free lunches or store discounts.

Camacho said DPS personnel, for example, should not accept free doughnuts or coffee from a store.

“My being in uniform does not give me privileges or rights to get any special kind of treatment,” Camacho told reporters.

Camacho said DPS personnel recently attended presentations on the Ethics Act conducted by the Office of the Public Auditor.

“This ethics presentation will continue as many times as we can. It serves as a refresher and a reminder to our DPS personnel,” he said.

DPS Administrative Officer Charlene Sablan said OPA had so far conducted three presentations on the Ethics Act.

“It’s very informative. They covered personnel service rules and regulations, the Ethics Act, and Civil Service Act,” Sablan said, adding that DPS officials, command staff and civilian personnel attended the presentations.

“We cannot accept gifts from anybody. It’s not just from businesses but also from personal associates. We also covered political activities and selling tickets. For example in government offices…that cannot be done especially if it deals with or relating to political fund-raisers,” Sablan said.
