Lawmakers recognize Rota educator

But her numerous contributions to the school and community of Rota will remain in the minds of the people, according to Rep. Teresita A. Santos.

On Monday, the House of Representative adopted Santos’ resolution expressing  sincere appreciation to Echanis for her contributions to the commonwealth, particularly  Rota.

Santos, Ind.-Rota, said Echanis’ leadership and classroom experiences were vital to the daily operations of Sinapalo Elementary School and beneficial to the entire school community.

“Echanis takes great pride in her responsibilities and accomplishments and undertakes any additional duties and responsibility without complaint and with a positive attitude, exemplifying her dedication and commitment to the education of CNMI’s youth, particularly on the island of Rota,” the resolution stated.

Echanis was a classroom teacher at Grace Christian Academy on Rota before becoming a classroom teacher at Sinapalo Elementary School. She was promoted in 2009 to the position of vice principal.

Santos said despite the overwhelming duties of a vice principal, Echanis often volunteered her services and leadership skills to perform extra tasks.

Echanis served as accreditation leadership chairwoman, primary home group chairwoman and language arts learning community chairwoman.

Echanis received her bachelor of arts in elementary education and Biblical studies from Trinity Bible College, in Ellendale, North Dakota in 2002, and earned her master of arts in educational leadership from Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota in 2008.

In an interview, Echanis said she will be moving to St. Paul, Minnesota to work with an international village ministry.

“I’m very honored and touched by the gesture of the Legislature,” she said, referring to the resolution.

She said she was surprised and humbled by the recognition.

It was a pleasure serving the school and the community on Rota for nine years, she added.
