Liberation Day Committee wants to have Las Vegas-type booths

Committee spokesman Tony Benavente said they have already asked the Attorney’s General’s Office if their proposal can be implemented.

“We are still waiting for AG’s [opinion],” he said.

Last year, the operator of a Las Vegas-type booth was able to operate for barely an hour before the AG’s office shut it down.

Benavente said the operator got a refund of his permit fee from the committee.

He added that they are also waiting for the response of the Saipan legislative delegation to Mayor Juan B. Tudela’s request for an  additional $100,000 funding for this year’s Liberation Day expenditures.

Due to their limited budget, Benavente said the committee will avoid extravagant activities.

The committee is planning to set up 30 booths this year and will collect a $1,200 application fee for  food and drink concessionaires, inclusive of alcohol and tobacco, and $800 for  food and soft drinks.

Benavente said the committee has asked three contractors and the Department of Public Works to estimate the cost of constructing a booth.

The search for the Liberation Day Queen has also begun.

All candidates should submit their applications on or before May 1.

The candidates should be single, 15 to 20 years old and no cohabitation.

Tudela appointed Joaquin P. Omar as overall chairman of the 2009 Liberation Day Committee and Isidoro Cabrera as vice chairman.

Rose T. Ada chairs the queen candidates committee; Susana Ellis, finance and solicitation; Joaquin I. Guerrero, communications; Felipe Atalig, floats and parade; Jose DLG. Tenorio, logistics and transportation; and Angel Hocog, carnival grounds booth concessions. Hocog’s vice chairwoman is Lucy Aldan.

This year’s Liberation Day theme is “Path for Peace.”

The celebration will start on June 5 and end on July 5.
