Library to hold 2-month summer reading & cultural fair

Library executive director John O. Gonzales, who was one of the guests during the Saipan Rotary Club meeting at the Hyatt Regency yesterday, said they will be holding a two-month Summer Reading & Cultural Fair from June 22 to Aug. 20.

The theme of the program is “Make a Splash.”

Gonzales said  this will feature various activities including Reading Challenge, Read Aloud, crafts, movies, traditional Carolinian and Chamorro cultural activities, and healthy ballroom dancing in cooperation with the Wise Women Village Project.

“We will be teaching healthy dancing as well as Chamorro warrior dancing for children and adults,” Gonzales said.

They will be finalizing the schedules next week.

Gonzales said the library also plans to reestablish the NMI Library Museum and Archives Association through a $40,000 grant awarded last April 2010 for Connecting to Collections 2010 Statewide Planning, and to leverage the library’s resources when applying for grants to augment their services and secure continuous professional development and training.

Gonzales said  they plan to get involved in “proactive” educational tax credit fundraising activities to further expand the services of the library.

Established on Dec.  21, 1991, the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library has over 30,000 registered users and over 70,000 collections of books, DVDs, and other reference materials.
