(DPS) — On March 10, 2026, at approximately 4:38 p.m., the Department of Public Safety 911 Dispatch received a report of an auto-pedestrian crash along Beach Road in Chalan Piao near Hopwood Middle School.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a southbound vehicle in the inner lane stopped at the marked crosswalk to allow a pedestrian waiting on the west side of the road to cross toward the east side. The driver reportedly activated the vehicle’s hazard lights to signal the pedestrian.
As the pedestrian began crossing the road, he ran across the crosswalk. When he reached the inner northbound lane, he was struck by a northbound vehicle traveling in that lane. The impact caused the pedestrian to be thrown into the air before landing and sliding across the roadway, eventually coming to rest in the inner southbound lane in front of the vehicle that had initially stopped for him.
Responders from the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and transported the pedestrian to the Commonwealth Health Center for medical treatment.
Medical personnel reported that the pedestrian sustained a fracture to the right arm and a head injury. The patient is currently listed in stable condition and has been admitted for observation. According to the attending physician, no internal bleeding has been reported at this time. The patient is responsive and able to communicate. Additional medical evaluations, including X-rays, are ongoing.
Weather conditions at the time of the incident were rainy, and the road surface was wet.
The Department of Public Safety reminds motorists to exercise caution, particularly during inclement weather, and to remain alert for pedestrians using marked crosswalks.
This incident remains under investigation.
